Supporting VoIP Traffic in IEEE 802.11 WLAN with Enhanced Medium Access Control (MAC) for Quality of Service

چکیده
With fast deployment of wireless local area networks (WLANs), the ability of WLAN to support real time services with stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements has come into fore. In this paper, we evaluate the capability of the enhanced point coordination function (EPCF) and enhanced distributed coordination function (EDCF), which are part of the medium access control (MAC) enhancements for QoS in the IEEE 802.11e supplements, to support voice over IP (VoIP) applications. The performance of VoIP under EPCF and EDCF is shown through simulations, and the impact of background traffic on the VoIP performance is also evaluated. Our results show that under the EPCF mode the end to end delay of VoIP traffic may be effectively controlled with admission control, and is not sensitive to the best effort traffic offered in contention based operation mode.

متن کاملThroughput and QoS Optimization in IEEE 802.11 WLAN
In a wireless LAN (WLAN) based on IEEE 802.11, supporting multiple classes of services with QoS constraints in MAC layer is very important. In this paper, we propose a class-based analytical model to support multiple traffic classes. Through investigating the relationship between access control parameters, such as contention window (CW) sizes and inter-frame space (IFS) under QoS constraints, w...
متن کاملPerformance Comparison of Dual Queue and EDCA for VoIP over IEEE 802.11 WLAN
The popular IEEE 802.11 WLAN today does not provide any quality-of-service (QoS) because of its contention-based channel access nature of the medium access control (MAC). Therefore, we proposed a simple software upgradebased solution, called a dual queue scheme, to provide QoS to real-time services such as Voiceover-IP (VoIP) in our previous work. The dual queue scheme operates on top of the le...

متن کاملA Modified MAC Behaviour for Multimedia Traffic in Wireless LAN for QoS Provisioning
IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN (WLAN) developed as a simple and cost-effective wireless technology for best effort services, IEEE 802.11 has gained popularity at an unprecedented rate. However, it lacks of the capability to support Quality of Services (QoS) such as multimedia and real-time traffic properly. This paper presents a simple approach to enhance the multimedia real-time performance over the...
